Still Life
Still Life watches one spot, Clearwater, Florida, and writes down what the instruments say. The color of this page is that light.
The sun’s place is calculated for 27.97° north, 82.80° west. Sunrise and sunset should land within a couple of minutes of an almanac. The color follows the sun’s height: copper when it is low, blue when it is high, and dark once it is gone.
The moon is calculated too. The phase name is reliable. “About N percent lit” is usually within a few percent of an almanac, because the moon’s orbit is not a perfect circle and this page does not try to be one.
Earthquakes are the U.S. Geological Survey’s list of events at magnitude 4.5 and above during the last day. The sentence names the largest. If the list is empty, that is the reading.
The planetary K-index is published by NOAA’s Space Weather Prediction Center. It runs from 0 to 9. Under 4, the magnetic field is ordinary. At 5 and above, a geomagnetic storm is in progress.
The space station’s latitude and longitude come from Open Notify. They are given to a tenth of a degree. The page does not guess whether that point is land or water.
A reading is saved at most every fifteen minutes, including through the night. The archive keeps the words as they were written. The page stores nothing about you. There is no account and no cookie.
